Active Schools Karate - Sport Karate East

Active Schools Karate

Outstanding performance of the day must go to Thomas Bradley!

In partnership with Dundee Active Schools, Sport Karate East facilitates two championships per year for the local authority. A Kumite Championship which takes place in the spring and a Kata Championship, which is run in autumn.

Karate is an expanding sport in Dundee, and we are delighted to be bringing this opportunity to schools across the city. The Active Schools Karate programme offers children and youths the opportunity to take up karate within their school and is a regular fixture within the designated school and provides pathways for the participants to further develop their karate.

SPORT KARATE EAST in partnership with Dundee Active Schools have just run the 5th Dundee ACTIVE SCHOOLS Kumite Championship, which took place on Sunday 7th May 2017, at Eastern Primary School, Dundee. 27 Schools competed to see who would be crowned one of the best in the City of Discovery! Only 10 were crowned an ASK Champion. They were fast and skilful, check-out the video for some highlights of the event.

This year saw Matthew Pratt win his 5thconsecutive ASK Championship title in the High School Boys category, and Daisy Hutchison win her 2ndconsecutive ASK Championship in the Girls Under 4ft 8” category.

However the standout performance of the day must go to Thomas Bradley in the Boys Under 4ft 8” who was losing to Kaydyn Forbes 1 – 0, with only 4 seconds left on the clock Thomas scored with a powerful Mawashi Geri Chudan making it 2 -1 in his favour, he subsequently used his ring craft to run down the clock to secure his victory. Thomas Bradley had great self-belief and made good quality decisions under significant pressure. These two young athletes were ON FIRE throughout day!

The Active Schools Karate programme in Dundee has seen young athletes go on to succeed at local, national and international events and a number of these youngsters are now part of the SKGB’s Youth Development Programme and aspire to be selected for the National Team.
