Preparing for Progression

Inside the Kumite Development Event

At SPORT KARATE EAST, we’re not just teaching karate, we’re helping young people grow in confidence, focus, and resilience. Our Kumite Development Event is a key part of that journey.

Whether your child is just starting or already on their way through the belts, this event is designed to build vital skills that will help them feel prepared, safe, and confident in sparring situations.

All sessions will follow World Karate Federation Kumite Rules, the gold standard for karate competition. Here’s a simple breakdown of what your child will experience, depending on their grade:

🥋 Novice Session (White Belts)

This session gently introduces sparring for beginners. We focus on:

  • Helping children feel comfortable moving and reacting to a partner

  • Teaching safe distancing – how close or far to stand

  • Explaining the basic rules in a simple, child-friendly way

  • Helping them recognise good movement and control by working closely with coaches

This builds trust, confidence, and a strong sense of control, all in a calm, encouraging environment.

🟡🟠 Yellow and Orange Belt Session

Here, students begin to understand sparring in more depth. We cover:

  • Practising safe ways to attack and defend

  • Learning how to score points using basic punches and kicks

  • Starting to make quick decisions under gentle pressure

  • Building the habit of thinking tactically, not just physically

This stage helps children start linking the discipline of karate to everyday focus, decision-making, and calm thinking.

🟢🟣 Green to Purple Belt Session

For our more experienced students, this session adds challenge and depth. We focus on:

  • Teaching students to plan and adapt their moves

  • Using more advanced footwork and combinations

  • Practising real competition scenarios, with scoring and judges

  • Giving detailed coaching to help them perform under pressure

This session supports children in developing mental sharpness, perseverance, and the ability to stay composed when it counts.

A Platform for Future Athletes

In addition to preparing students for progression, this event also helps us identify potential candidates for the SKE Kumite Athletes Programme – our specialist pathway for those with the passion, mindset, and potential to compete at a higher level.

We’re always looking for students who show focus, coachability, determination, and a love for the challenge of kumite. This event provides an ideal environment to spot that early spark.

Essential for Progression

Attendance at the Kumite Development Event is required for all students who wish to move forward in their belt journey.
It’s a key part of our Progression Pathway Examination, so missing this session could delay your child’s next step.

💬 Why This Matters

This event isn’t just about karate technique, it’s about learning how to stay calm under pressure, think ahead, and respect both challenge and structure. These are life skills that go far beyond the dojo.

What do you think your child might learn about themselves from this experience?

We’d love to hear your thoughts.
